Amazon confirmed a workforce reduction on Wednesday, though it declined to specify how much of the cut affects its retail operations. These changes come amid broader shifts in the company, where other business segments, such as advertising, subscriptions, and AWS, are growing faster than retail.

In its latest earnings report for Q3, Amazon saw significant growth in its non-retail sectors. Seller services sales grew 12% year over year to $42.5 billion. Advertising saw a 24% increase to $17.7 billion, and subscription services grew 11% to $12.6 billion. Meanwhile, AWS net sales rose by 20%, surpassing $33 billion.

AI’s Role in Amazon’s Strategic Changes

Amazon’s workforce reduction is tied to the company’s increased reliance on artificial intelligence. In October, Amazon explained that fewer employees would be needed as generative AI evolves, making some roles obsolete. CEO Andy Jassy further noted that AI will play a key role in shifting e-commerce to outpace brick-and-mortar retail.

“I still think if you look at the worldwide market segment share of retail, still 80% to 85% of it lives in physical stores,” Jassy said. “That equation is going to flip over time. And I think AI is going to only accelerate that.”

This strategic shift has implications for Amazon’s retail operations, which are being overshadowed by these faster-growing business areas.

Retail Changes: Store Closures and Expansions

In line with these shifts, Amazon announced it will close all Amazon Fresh and Go stores while expanding its Whole Foods fleet and same-day grocery delivery service. These changes reflect a re-evaluation of Amazon’s retail footprint in favor of more profitable, scalable services.

The company also confirmed that U.S.-based employees affected by this round of layoffs will have 90 days to find a new internal role, with varying timelines for international workers. For those who cannot transition to new roles, Amazon will offer severance pay, outplacement services, and continued health insurance benefits where applicable.

Long-term Strategy and Employee Support

Despite the workforce reductions, Amazon’s memo reassured employees that this second round of layoffs does not signal a broader pattern of layoffs. Galetti emphasized that the company continues to evaluate its teams to ensure that each division can innovate and respond quickly to changes in the fast-moving business environment.

“That’s never been more important than it is today in a world that’s changing faster than ever,” Galetti noted, underlining Amazon’s ongoing adjustments in the face of rapidly evolving technological advancements.

The future of Amazon’s retail and AI

As Amazon continues to integrate AI into its business model, its retail strategy is shifting. The company is focusing on optimizing its workforce, expanding successful sectors, and adapting to changing market conditions. While the retail segment faces challenges, the company’s broader strategy positions it for long-term growth in its non-retail ventures, particularly in cloud services, advertising, and e-commerce.

This focus on AI and other high-growth areas could ultimately reshape Amazon’s presence in physical retail. As AI continues to evolve, the company’s ability to innovate and adjust to new opportunities will be key to maintaining its leadership position in the marketplace.
