Pinterest has announced a reduction in its workforce, following in the footsteps of Amazon, as it shifts its focus toward artificial intelligence (AI) and strategic reinvestment. In a recent SEC filing, the company confirmed its plans to reinvest in key development areas and explore new strategic opportunities as part of its AI-powered growth.
Pinterest’s AI Strategy
Over the past few months, Pinterest has increasingly turned to AI to enhance its platform’s shopping experience. The company has harnessed its own data, using AI to make the platform more intuitive for users. In September, Pinterest introduced “where-to-buy” links on image ads, which direct users to retailers with products in stock. This feature boosted user engagement and improved performance compared to previous campaigns that utilized external landing pages.
New AI-Powered Features
Pinterest’s AI focus continued in October with the launch of several new product discovery features. The “Make it yours” tab offers personalized fashion and home content recommendations, while the “more ideas” tab suggests similar pins in categories such as beauty and art. Additionally, Pinterest introduced the “Styled for you” feature, using AI to create fashion collages based on saved pins, which helps users discover and purchase new looks.
Leveraging Data for Holiday Shopping
Pinterest also leveraged its internal data during the 2025 holiday season to curate gift guides. By collaborating with experts and celebrities, Pinterest used search, click, and shopping data to create tailored gift suggestions across categories like home, fashion, tech, and beauty. Pinterest noticed an uptick in search queries such as “budget-friendly gifts for boyfriend,” using this data to generate relevant suggestions for users.
Pinterest’s Future Plans
Despite the recent workforce reduction, Pinterest remains focused on leveraging AI to drive its future growth. The company is committed to reinvesting in strategic areas, ensuring its AI-powered features continue to improve the shopping experience for users.
