IKEA Tests Digital Home Furnishing in Roblox’s Bloxburg Game
IKEA is venturing into the digital world with an innovative test in Welcome to Bloxburg, a life-simulation game on the Roblox platform where players can build and design homes. From 22 January to 5 February, players will have the opportunity to unlock and interact with a selection of popular IKEA products such as the Stockholm sofa and Elsystem rug within the game. This small-scale test, running in Sweden and Australia, is designed to evaluate customer engagement and explore how IKEA can enhance its “better everyday life” vision in digital spaces.
The digital experience will be hosted in an in-game IKEA pop-up located in Bloxburg’s Fancy Furniture Store or through the product library, where users can explore the iconic designs in a virtual setting. This initiative will help IKEA assess how its products translate into digital environments, focusing on design usability, product appeal, and user interaction in virtual spaces. The trial run will provide valuable insights into how IKEA can extend its offerings and services to new, digitally immersive platforms.
Additionally, IKEA stores in Sweden and Australia will participate by offering customers the chance to unlock even more digital items. These exclusive products can be accessed by scanning QR codes hidden around the stores. This move further integrates the digital and physical realms, blending online and in-store experiences for a more connected shopping journey.
Sara Vestberg, the home furnishing direction leader at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), expressed excitement about the initiative, saying, “We’re delighted to bring some of our most loved IKEA products into this digital space. With curiosity, we’re looking forward to seeing the home furnishing ideas people create and how our products feel at home in their digital lives.”
Parag Parekh, chief digital officer at IKEA Retail, added, “This pilot is very much about learning and exploring. We’re using it to better understand how digital environments can enrich the IKEA experience, while continuing to stay true to our values and what customers expect from us.” This pilot project marks an important step for IKEA in exploring digital transformations while maintaining its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.
